Position Summary:

An NIH funded postdoctoral position is available in the Slade Laboratory for highly motivated individuals to obtain X-ray crystal structures and co-crystal structures with inhibitors of the essential isoprenoid precursor biosynthesis protein IspD from the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum. This position is a collaborative effort between the Slade Lab and the laboratories of Paul Carlier, Ph.D. (Chemistry, Virginia Tech, http://wwww.carliergroup.chem.vt.edu) and M. Belen Cassera, Ph.D. (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, UGA, http://www.bmb.uga.edu/directory/belen-cassera). The Slade Laboratory (http://www.thesladelab.com) in the Department of Biochemistry at Virginia Tech is a vibrant and diverse group that specializes in creating new genetic, biochemical, and synthetic tools to understand host pathogen interactions in multiple diseases.

The successful candidate will be responsible for cloning constructs of malarial enzymes, recombinant expression and E. coli and potential eukaryotic systems, protein purification, protein crystallization, 3D structure solving using various X-ray crystallography software, reporting experimental data, writing scientific publications, synthesis of new ideas to drive project growth, and independently troubleshooting multiple projects to maximize productivity.

Required Qualifications:

Eligible candidates must have a recently earned advanced degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) in Biochemistry or a closely related field. Published experience in protein X-ray crystallography, molecular biology, and biochemistry is required.
