Position Summary:

The Department of Political Science at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Integrated Security. This faculty search is part of a cross-college cluster hire being conducted in the Integrated Security Destination Area (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html), which is one of several focused Virginia Tech initiatives to recruit and support world-class groups of faculty that bridge disciplinary strengths. This initial hire focuses on multiple aspects of today’s embedded cyber-physical/human systems. We seek a colleague who will build upon our departmental, college, and university strengths in the study of all dimensions of governance, privacy, and security at the interconnections of the digital and physical worlds as humans, groups, institutions, and systems link these domains of complex action. Over the next four years, the number of Internet-connected devices will more than double, changing the ways people interact with technologies and their environments; however, fundamental security and privacy challenges have yet to be adequately addressed for these new technologies. This cluster hire will foster cross-disciplinary collaborations that explore these challenges through the lenses of technology, law, governance, ethics, and business.

We are interested in applicants who can demonstrate research and teaching expertise in one or more of the following domains of inquiry: human security and insecurity (broadly defined) in “the Internet of things”; the effects of these new developments on politics, governance, and security in organizations, states, or other entities; U.S. national, subnational, or transnational responses to network security threats; human governance of cyber-physical systems, property regimes, or regulatory organizations; security and governance questions related to immigration, refugee flows, cross-border movements, and displaced populations; security and class, gender, and/or race/ethnicity. Focusing on these governance issues and public policy responses in North America is the main emphasis but other cross-national perspectives are welcome. Applicants who approach these concerns from a theoretical and critical perspective are encouraged to apply. The standard teaching load is two courses per semester. This position will begin August 10, 2017.

Required Qualifications:

Earned doctorate in political science or related field at the time of application or degree in hand by August 10, 2017. Successful applicants will demonstrate a strong interest in conducting research, teaching courses, and seeking grants and contracts in how the Internet of things affects concerns of human security/insecurity as they relate to governance of the public, private, and non-profit sectors as well the class, gender, locational, and racial dimensions of security in cyber-physical/human systems at any scale in U.S. national, subnational, and transnational contexts. Successful candidates will have documented effectiveness in both undergraduate and graduate teaching as well as program development in order to meet the Political Science department’s key needs in its B.A. and M.A. programs and those of doctoral students in cognate programs involved in the Integrated Security Destination Area. Potential for excellence in research and teaching is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to broadly trained candidates who have grounding and skills in a variety of theoretical, analytical, critical, and methodological approaches to security and governance, and who can work with undergraduate and graduate students. Prior teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels is strongly preferred as well as documented success in collaborative activity in transdisciplinary teams.
