The local Morning Edition host will be a signature voice for WVTF and RADIO IQ. This key position is responsible for seamlessly conveying the sound and approach taken by NPR’s Morning Edition in the presentation of locally produced newscasts and feature length reports as well as in the announcing during segment breaks in the program in keeping with Public Radio’s Core Values for News/Talk Programming.
The host will be fully responsible for editorial decisions on our most listened to program; this person must use advanced production skills and impeccable broadcast instincts to create a highly listenable and engaging program through the careful editing and use of copy, continuity, promos, breaking-news and interviews.
Additional responsibilities include conducting interviews after Morning Edition for use on the program or other WVTF/RADIO IQ programming as well as light reporting duties. The Morning Edition host will also participate in our on air fund raising campaigns and serve as a public representative of WVTF/RADIO IQ.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent level training/experience in English, journalism, communications or related field.
Extensive experience in broadcast announcing, hosting and related activities, preferably in public radio.
Extensive experience in using broadcast equipment in studio and in the field.
Experience in journalism, reporting, editing, and editorial decision making with expertise in areas of interest to a public radio audience.
Excellent communication skills on the air and with coworkers. Ability to perform on the air in a consistently interesting, friendly and relaxed manner that matches that of the national hosts.
A professional broadcast delivery as well as a pleasant and engaging voice.
A superior ear and sense of sound as well as personality and a sense of humor that will relate well with our listeners.
Capable of calmly handling tight deadlines and changes within the program’s broadcast schedule.
Proven critical judgment skills and ability to make quick decisions regarding credibility, personality and value of material to program.
Working knowledge of computers and broadcasting equipment including digital audio playout and editing, audio board operation, and transmitter monitoring.
Interest in and knowledge of a broad range of subjects and people; a natural sense of curiosity about the region we serve and the world in general.
Experience in presentation, production, writing and storytelling in the NPR style.
Proven interviewing techniques.
