The Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences is seeking applicants for Assistant Professor, Neurobiology, who are willing to establish and support a highly visible, competitive neurosciences discovery program. Primary responsibilities of this academic year, tenure track position will be research (70%) and teaching (30%). The successful applicant will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: molecular neuroscience, electrophysiology, neurogenetics or behavioral neuroscience. Candidates should be poised to use animal models to understand neural pathways that affect economically relevant agricultural traits and contribute to human health and well-being. Significant scholarly output is expected, such as peer-reviewed research publication, review articles, etc. Furthermore, significant contribution to undergraduate education and advising is required as is graduate student and postdoctoral mentoring. This position is part of a neuroscience cluster hire with the School of Neurosciences faculty at Virginia Tech. Additional interactions with existing programmatic efforts in behavior and welfare, nutrition, disease, genetics, physiology, the human-animal bond, therapeutic intervention, and companion animals as model organisms to understand human health are anticipated. The appointee will have access to a wide-range of animal and infrastructure resources across campus including those available at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine.
Candidates must have: 1) a Ph.D. in Neurobiology or a closely-related field with demonstrated strong background in neurosciences; 2) a vision for developing a sustainable independent research program and ability and willingness to develop collaborative programs; and 3) a strong interest in undergraduate and graduate education. Preferred qualifications include a willingness to lead or collaborate with research teams using large animals and a desire to explore the use of non-traditional laboratory animals as potential biomedical models to study human maladies.
