Position Summary:

Serves as WVTF/RADIO IQ news director and leads the development of long-range vision for news reporting. As a member of the senior leadership team, the News Director will participate in strategic planning to develop a collective vision for WVTF/RADIO IQ, and will work to implement the plan.

Responsible for setting the news and editorial policies and directing the day to day operation of the news department including supervision of news anchors, reporters, interns, and freelance and contract content producers.

The News Director is the news department’s primary contact and coordinator for developing and evaluating story ideas; selecting reporters for coverage, assigning stories; editing stories before they air using public radio’s core values concepts to assure the journalism and production values meet WVTF/RADIO IQ style and standards; scheduling stories for publication and air; and insuring news reports are produced effectively, timely and responsibly.

Keeps current on stories making news in WVTF/RADIO IQ listening area as well as trends and fresh ideas that create compelling and engaging content WVTF/RADIO IQ listeners.

Works closely with program director to assure locally produced content fits the station’s sound and newsroom philosophy. Also serves as Managing Editor/News Director of Virginia Public Radio (VPR), a public radio news collaboration serving the Commonwealth.

Serves as backup local host for key programs such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

Oversees news content posted to the WVTF/RADIO IQ website, and ensures social media posts involving news content adhere to established core values.

Required Qualifications:

Substantial experience in: making editorial decisions and reporting assignments, directing reporting efforts, interviewing, researching, writing and editing news copy, audio production/audio editing, producing in-depth stories, conversation programs and enterprise journalism for broadcast and use on the web and in social media.

Experience with broadcast equipment in the studio and in the field including audio capture software, preparing audio for online posting and other new media tools, digital recorders and other digital equipment used in broadcasting.

Strong computer skills with audio and text programs.

Professional sound in live and recorded work.

Master’s degree in relevant field; or Bachelor’s degree with experience equating to an advanced degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

Public radio experience.

Extensive experience with live radio hosting and news delivery.

Familiarity with WVTF/RADIO IQ broadcast area/Virginia.

Multimedia production experience.
