Position Summary:

The Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine are important components of a successful public-private partnership between the Commonwealth of Virginia’s leading research university – Virginia Tech – and a major health care system – Carilion Clinic, in Roanoke, VA. Located in the picturesque Roanoke Valley midway between Washington DC and Charlotte, NC, the VTC Research Institute houses 25 independent research groups with over 250 research and support team members and over $70M in current active extramural research funding.

The VTC Research Institute has an immediate opening for a Web Applications Developer; an administrative-centric role that will actively engage to plan, design, implement and maintain the components making up various web-based applications at the VTC; including SQL databases, middleware layers and end-user interfaces. The incumbent is expected to work with external Website design contractors in ongoing efforts to redesign the VTCRI Website and migrate the content to new templates. The primary function will be additions and maintenance to the VTC Research Institute’s content management system which is an MVT (Model-View-Template) architecture utilizing a Python-based framework. This will require a significant working knowledge of SQL, Python, HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Additional responsibilities will include consultation and modification of any and all web-based tools used at VTC Research Institute. This position also requires the ability to interact and communicate with a diverse customer base and executive management.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and/or experience which equates to an advanced degree, or Master’s degree.

Significant development experience with the following technologies: Python, SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript.

A solid understanding of web application development processes, from the layout/user interface to relational database structures.

Thorough knowledge of Object Oriented Programming.

Experience with MVT/MVC architecture.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with Django framework.

Proficiency in Adobe content management systems.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) understanding and knowledge.
