The Department of Geography at Virginia Tech is seeking a visionary and energetic individual to serve as professor and department chair. This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position available July 1, 2017. The successful candidate will have a record of effective leadership and a portfolio of teaching, discovery, and engagement successes in geography or a closely related field. The department chair will promote a collaborative vision and oversee the department’s human, fiscal, and physical resources. Currently, the department is comprised of two staff and 17 full-time faculty members who serve 302 undergraduate students and 25 graduate students. The department chair reports to the dean of the College of Natural Resources and Environment and serves on the dean’s leadership team.
The Department of Geography offers the B.A. in Geography, the B.S. in Meteorology, and the M.S. in Geography. Faculty in the department also advise Ph.D. students through the college’s doctoral program in Geospatial and Environmental Analysis. The Department of Geography is situated in the College of Natural Resources and Environment, which is ranked the No. 1 program in the nation for natural resources and conservation by USA Today for the second straight year. The College of Natural Resources and Environment is one of eight colleges at Virginia Tech. Composed of 150 faculty and staff, 1,000 students, $15 million in annual research expenditures and a $25 million budget, more than 20 research centers, and strong and innovative academic programs across four academic departments, the college is a North American and international leader in advancing the science of sustainability through its work in Geography, Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation, Sustainable Biomaterials, and Fish and Wildlife Conservation. Candidates must have: (1) a Ph.D. in Geography or a closely related field; (2) teaching, discovery, and engagement accomplishments commensurate with expectations for tenure at the rank of professor; (3) experience and/or potential in leading highly engaged research and teaching programs; (4) evidence of a broad view and appreciation of the field of geography as encompassing both human and physical geography and meteorology; and (5) a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.
In addition to the above required qualifications, it is preferred that candidates have: (1) a record of success in leading program design, implementation, and management; (2) experience supporting faculty with diverse areas of expertise; (3) evidence of successful interaction with stakeholder groups, including collaboration with others in fostering private support for departmental programs; (4) demonstrated ability to foster open and transparent communication; (5) an advanced degree in Geography; (6) an understanding of current and emerging trends in the fields represented in the department; and (7) enthusiasm for working within the context of the three-part mission of a land-grant university.
