Position Summary:

The College Science seeks a skilled, versatile, creative Web Developer. The web developer will provide front-end development for College of Science web projects, utilizing HTML, CSS, Javascript and JQuery. Responsibilities include: working with the Web Designer to develop and produce web themes and templates for the College and Departments as needed; supporting daily production of site content; and implementing interactive features that reinforce and promote the College’s brand.

The web developer must be collaborative and work well with others to solve complex digital problems. Although this position is highly technical, the successful candidate will be: highly collaborative, willing and able to provide insight and feedback when necessary, and able to receive and integrate feedback from a variety of stakeholders. The web developer will work with communications team to present a website that best tells the story of the College to current and prospective students, as well as faculty, staff, donors, and alumni.

Required Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training and/or experience in information technology.
-Expertise in HTML, CSS, Javascript and JQuery.
-Knowledge of Git workflow and version control for code.
-Ability to translate photoshop documents into working web projects.
-Strong communication skills.
-An understanding of principles surrounding responsive web design and presenting content for multiple devices and platforms.
-An understanding of best practices in search engine optimization and web analytics.
-Strong attention to detail.
-Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Master’s degree in IT, graphic design, or related field.
-Working knowledge of Adobe Experience Manager or related content management systems (CMS).
-Expertise in theming for CMS applications.
-Proficiency with Sass or Less preprocessing.
-Proficiency with Java, Python, PHP and web application development.
-An appreciation of and excitement for the innovative and interdisciplinary nature of Science at Virginia Tech.
